St. John's Lutheran Church Pre-K Assistant Teacher

General Position Description

The Assistant Teacher works collaboratively with the Lead Teacher to foster a cohesive classroom environment, assist with curriculum implementation, and support day-to-day operational activities. Assistant Teachers must understand children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development in order to support a safe, nurturing, and stimulating classroom where children are actively engaged and encouraged to succeed. The Assistant Teacher must be skilled in communicating warmly and effectively with children, parents, and staff, assisting the Lead Teacher in guiding student learning and caring for children with a Christ-centered approach.

This position reports to the Kindergarten Director and/or administrative designee, working under the daily guidance of the Lead Teacher.

Major Responsibilities (includes, but is not limited to):

• Support the mission, vision, and core values of St. John’s Kindergarten.
• Develop positive, supportive relationships with parents, children, families, and staff.
• Assist the Lead Teacher in implementing adopted educational curriculum and daily learning activities. Facilitate small-group instruction, one-on-one student reinforcement, and classroom transitions.
• Assist and provide children with Christian-based education, including praying, sharing Bible stories, and modeling Christian values.
• Work collaboratively with the teaching partner, supporting daily goals through active engagement and classroom setup/prep.
• Help carry out individual and group age-appropriate activities designed to encourage social, cognitive, and emotional growth.
• Assist in maintaining open, positive communication with parents as directed by the Lead Teacher and administration.
• Ensure all center policies and state regulations are met at all times.
• Help ensure a healthy, clean classroom environment—including maintaining appropriate hygiene, cleanliness standards, sanitization, and the overall safety and security of children.
• Assist in modeling routines, supervising students, and helping classroom volunteers align with daily schedules and safety standards.
• Help maintain accurate student records, forms, and classroom files as requested.
• Maintain a personal professional development plan to ensure continuous quality improvement and attend all required trainings.
• Actively supervise children at all times across all settings (classroom, playground, walks, walks to St. John's CDC as needed, transitions, etc.).
• Responsible for observing children and reporting any developmental or behavioral concerns promptly to the Lead Teacher and administration.
• Complete all assigned administrative duties and paperwork accurately and according to schedule/due dates.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

• Strong oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills.
• High-energy and the ability to work well with others (staff, children, and parents) and to foster a team environment.
• A strong understanding of child development.
• Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Clear drug test.

Education and Training

• Experience working in childcare preferred
• CPR and First Aid Certification

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to stand for long periods of time throughout the day with intermittent periods of sitting, walking, and occasional bending.
• Frequent to occasional lifting of children and/or objects up to 50 pounds.
• Dexterity requirements range from coordinated movements of fingers and hands to simple movements of feet, legs, and torso as necessary to carry out job duties.

• Normal hours: 7:30-12:30pm.
• Extra hours as needed for special, after hours, programming and events.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $12.00 - $15.00 per hour
