Elementary School Afterschool Teacher

Overview
Children’s Community School is a progressive elementary school located in Van Nuys, CA. Grounded in the philosophy of American educator John Dewey, the school utilizes a social studies core curriculum with hands-on exploration, including block building, field trips for research, and a rich arts program. The Auxiliary team creates the fun both during the extended day and summer camp. You will assist in creating and inspiring these positive afternoon activities.

Duties

• Supervise children during afterschool programs, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times
• Implement engaging activities that promote social, emotional, and cognitive development aligned with educational standards
• Manage classroom behavior through effective behavior management techniques and positive reinforcement strategies
• Collaborate with parents, guardians, and school staff to communicate children's progress and address any concerns
• Maintain a clean, organized environment that supports learning and play
• Administer basic first aid when necessary, following health and safety protocols
• Support children with special education needs by adapting activities and providing individualized attention when required
• Monitor individuals or small groups of students assigned to an after-school program; assure student understanding of program rules and procedures; maintain appropriate order and student conduct.
• Assist in the planning and implementation of a daily program which will meet the needs of the children in attendance; set up program, project, and activity areas as needed. Support in teacher coordination and overall program operations for Extended Care and Enrichment classes.
• Foster a positive relationship with teachers and staff
• Assist in maintaining program standards of student behavior needed to achieve effectiveparticipation in activities without interfering with the natural, informal atmosphere of the After-School Program; assist in resolving student disputes; refer serious discipline problems to program supervisors.
• Maintain a clean and organized environment for students; demonstrate and involve students in cleaning and organizing the program activities areas before, during, and after use.
• If needed, supervise children on campus during conference days, writing days, and professional development days.
• Experience
• Proven experience working with children in educational, childcare, camp, or tutoring settings
• Strong classroom management skills with the ability to maintain discipline in a positive manner
• Knowledge of childhood development principles and early childhood education best practices
• Bachelor's degree preferred with a focus on education or child development.
• Contagious enthusiasm and charisma, a passion for customer service, and the ability to engage and inspire students, parents, and colleagues.
• Encourager of student engagement and participation by fostering peer and multi-age activities.
• Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and time management skills.
• Risk-taker with a creative and collaborative approach to problem-solving.
