Assistant Childcare Director

The Barrington School | New Albany-West
Full-Time | Monday–Friday 40 - 45 hours per week
Salary: $45,000–$52,000 annually, based on experience and qualifications

The Barrington School is looking for a motivated, organized, and relationship-focused Assistant Director to join our leadership team.

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys being in the middle of the action—supporting teachers, connecting with families, helping manage staffing and classroom needs, maintaining licensing standards, and working alongside the Director to keep the school running smoothly.

The Assistant Director serves as an important link between our administrative team and our classrooms. We're looking for someone who can see what needs to be done, step in when needed, communicate well, and help create a school environment where both children and teachers can thrive.

About The Barrington School

The Barrington School is a family-owned early childhood education program committed to providing children and families with a high-quality experience.

Our schools strive to maintain lower student-to-teacher ratios and provide families with conveniences such as freshly prepared organic meals, enrichment opportunities, diapers, wipes, linens, bibs, and more.

Behind all of those things is a strong team—and our Assistant Director plays an important role in supporting that team every day.

What You'll DoSupport Daily School Operations

  • Work closely with the Director to support the daily operations of the school.
  • Help monitor classroom staffing, ratios, schedules, breaks, and transitions throughout the day.
  • Maintain awareness of what is happening throughout the building and respond proactively when support is needed.
  • Assist with opening, closing, and daily administrative responsibilities as assigned.
  • Help coordinate classroom coverage when staffing needs change.
  • Step into classrooms when necessary while maintaining awareness of overall center operations.
  • Serve as the acting leader of the school when the Director is unavailable.

Support & Develop Our Teachers

  • Build positive and professional relationships with teaching staff.
  • Help communicate expectations clearly and consistently.
  • Provide teachers with coaching, feedback, resources, and day-to-day support.
  • Conduct classroom observations and help identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Recognize and celebrate strong performance.
  • Assist with addressing performance or professionalism concerns alongside the Director.
  • Support new-hire onboarding and help new team members successfully transition into the Barrington culture.

Maintain Licensing, Health & Safety Standards

  • Maintain a strong understanding of Ohio childcare licensing requirements.
  • Help ensure classrooms remain compliant with required ratios, supervision, health, safety, and documentation requirements.
  • Assist with maintaining required staff and child records.
  • Support licensing visits, inspections, drills, training requirements, and ongoing compliance.
  • Regularly walk classrooms and shared spaces to identify concerns before they become problems.
  • Help ensure school policies and procedures are being followed consistently.

Support Children & Families

  • Create a welcoming environment for children and families.
  • Build relationships with parents and guardians through daily communication.
  • Help respond to family questions and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
  • Partner with teachers and the Director when additional support is needed for a child or family.
  • Assist with tours and help prospective families understand what makes Barrington different.
  • Support family retention by helping provide a consistent, high-quality experience.

Support Enrollment & Administrative Operations

  • Assist with enrollment inquiries, tours, follow-up, and new-family onboarding.
  • Maintain awareness of classroom enrollment and available openings.
  • Help manage administrative systems, documentation, and communication.
  • Assist with schedules, attendance, staffing information, and other operational reports.
  • Support center events, staff meetings, professional development, and school initiatives.
  • Partner with the Director on center goals and improvement initiatives.

What We're Looking For

Our ideal Assistant Director is someone who doesn't need to be told every small thing that needs attention.

You notice.

You communicate.

You follow through.

You understand that sometimes leadership means coaching a teacher, sometimes it means talking with a parent, and sometimes it means stepping into a classroom to help the team through a busy part of the day.

We're looking for someone who enjoys being part of a team while also being comfortable taking ownership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working in a licensed early childhood education or childcare program.
  • Previous Assistant Director, administrative, lead teacher, or childcare leadership experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Ohio childcare licensing requirements.
  • Experience supporting or supervising employees.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent organization and follow-through.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable providing feedback and having professional accountability conversations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Confidence communicating with families.
  • Comfortable using technology and childcare management systems.
  • Experience with OCCRRA, OCLQS and Procare is helpful.
  • Must meet applicable Ohio childcare administrator requirements.
  • Must successfully complete all required background checks.

The Assistant Director We're Looking For

You'll likely thrive in this position if you:

  • Lead by example.
  • Take initiative.
  • Pay attention to what is happening around you.
  • Communicate instead of assuming.
  • Follow through on the things you say you'll do.
  • Can be warm and supportive while still maintaining expectations.
  • Enjoy coaching and developing others.
  • Aren't afraid to jump in and help.
  • Can prioritize what needs attention first.
  • Understand that strong leadership is both relational and operational.
  • Want to grow your leadership skills and continue developing professionally.

Why Barrington?

Our Assistant Director isn't simply an administrative support person.

You'll have an opportunity to help shape the culture of the school, develop teachers, build relationships with families, strengthen classroom quality, and work directly alongside the Director to continuously improve the program.
