A daycare teacher plans and runs the classroom day in a childcare center: caring for children's physical needs, teaching early skills, supervising the room, keeping records on each child, and communicating with families.

This page breaks the job into its core duties, follows those duties across the day from arrival to pick-up, sorts what the teacher owns versus other staff in the room, and shows a sample job description.

What does a daycare teacher do?

A daycare teacher plans and runs a classroom in a childcare center.

The short answer to what they do is a five-part duty list: care routines that keep children fed, changed and comfortable; teaching that builds early skills; supervision that keeps the room watched; records that track each child's day; and communication with families.

Federal statistics split the title across two occupations, each with its own task list: O*NET lists 'Daycare Teacher', 'Infant Teacher' and 'Toddler Teacher' among the reported job titles for childcare workers (SOC 39-9011), and 'Infant Teacher' and 'Toddler Teacher' also appear among the reported titles for preschool teachers (SOC 25-2011), alongside 'Pre-Kindergarten Teacher' and 'Montessori Preschool Teacher'.

Job title alone doesn't decide which of the two occupations a classroom role falls under, so this page draws on both task lists.

The childcare-worker list covers care routines, records and daily family contact; the preschool-teacher list adds teaching basic skills and meeting with parents about progress.

For the role itself โ€” the definition, the age groups, the settings and what you need to get hired โ€” the daycare teacher career guide covers the full picture.

This page stays on the duties.

Core daycare teacher duties: care, teaching, supervision, records, family communication

The five core daycare teacher duties recur across age groups, even though the mix shifts between rooms.

Here is what each one involves.

  • Care routines. Dressing children, changing diapers and sanitizing toys are named tasks on O*NET's childcare worker list, and serving meals and snacks following nutritional guidelines is on the preschool teacher list.
  • Teaching. The preschool-teacher task list names teaching basic skills โ€” color, shape, number and letter recognition, personal hygiene, and social skills โ€” among its tasks, and in a center that teaching is woven into play, circle time, learning centers and the day's planned activities.
  • Supervision. Watching the room is the duty that never pauses โ€” it continues through care routines, teaching and every transition of the day, indoors and out.
  • Records. Keeping records on individual children โ€” daily observations and information about activities, meals served, and medications administered โ€” is a named childcare worker task, and the preschool teacher list adds maintaining student records.
  • Family communication. Communicating with parents about daily activities and behaviors sits on the childcare worker list, and the preschool teacher list adds meeting with parents about children's progress.

A layer runs underneath all five: O*NET lists monitoring, active listening, critical thinking, speaking, active learning, learning strategies, reading comprehension and writing among the essential skills for childcare workers โ€” listening and speaking carry the conversations with children and their families, and reading and writing carry the records.

Daycare teacher duties across the day: arrival to pick-up

Classroom duty lists repeat daily, but where the hours fall depends on the center's schedule.

BLS notes that childcare centers are usually open year round with long hours, and that some centers cover the whole day with full-time and part-time staff on staggered shifts.

BLS also describes part-time work and irregular hours as common for childcare workers.

With that caveat, here is the shape of a full-day classroom from arrival to pick-up.

  • Before the children arrive. Set up the room for the day's activities, check materials, and review the plan.
  • Arrival and drop-off. Greet each child, take the handoff from the dropping-off adult, and capture anything the family flags โ€” this is where the day's parent-communication duty starts.
  • Morning play and learning blocks. Run the planned activities and weave the basic-skills teaching โ€” colors, shapes, numbers, letters, hygiene, social skills โ€” into play, circle time and learning centers.
  • Meals and snacks. Serve meals and snacks following nutritional guidelines, help younger children at the table, and record what was served.
  • Diapering, dressing and hygiene. Handle diapering and dressing through the day in infant and toddler rooms, and move children toward the self-care versions โ€” washing hands, dressing themselves โ€” as they get older.
  • Rest time. Supervise naps and use the quiet window to enter the day's observations while they are fresh.
  • Outdoor play. Take the class outside and hold the same close supervision in a bigger, louder space.
  • Pick-up and the evening handoff. Give each family a picture of the day โ€” activities, behavior, meals โ€” the daily-communication task in its most visible form.
  • After pick-up. Sanitize toys, reset the room, and set up for tomorrow.

On a staggered-shift schedule, the same duties are simply split across more adults โ€” one teacher may own the morning arc while a second covers the afternoon.

Before you accept an offer, ask exactly which hours you'd hold โ€” the shift you get decides which parts of this list you'll actually do.

What is a daycare teacher responsible for vs other staff in the room?

Where a room has more than one adult, the daycare teacher responsibilities split by role:

  • Lead teacher. Carries the classroom: the plan for the day, the activities on the shelves, each child's record, and the family conversations โ€” the duty list this page describes.
  • Assistant teachers and aides. Support the lead โ€” preparing materials, helping with meals and cleanup, sharing care routines, and adding a second pair of eyes for supervision โ€” under the lead's direction.
  • Floaters. Move between rooms wherever the schedule needs coverage, taking on the duties of whichever room they're in for that stretch.
  • Director and assistant director. Carry the program-level work โ€” enrollment, staffing, the license, tuition questions โ€” which sits outside the classroom teacher's job.

The vocabulary differs from schools, too. 'Paraprofessional' has a specific federal meaning in the public-school Title I rules (34 CFR 200.58): the rule defines a paraprofessional as someone who provides instructional support, and it excludes individuals whose duties are only non-instructional, such as personal care.

That school definition doesn't set titles or duties for aides in licensed childcare centers โ€” center aides and assistants are hired under the center's own job descriptions and their state's licensing rules instead.

In the ordinary division of center work, the classroom teacher is also not responsible for setting tuition and enrollment policy, hiring, the center's license, cooking the meals (that's the cook) or driving the van (that's the driver, where a center runs one).

The lines vary by center, and a good interview question clears up exactly where your job sits relative to them.

Supervision rules come from your state child care licensing agency

How many adults must be in a room, and how many children each adult may supervise, are set by your state's child care licensing rules. This page is career information, not licensing advice; confirm the current staffing and supervision rules with your state child care licensing agency.

Sample daycare teacher job description

A daycare teacher job description is assembled from a few parts โ€” a position summary, the duty list, qualifications, the schedule and pay.

The sample below fills that shape with the duties from this page, so you can check a real posting against it: the closer a posting's duty list is to the one below, the closer the job is to the role described here.

Position summary

[Center name] is hiring a daycare teacher for our [age group] classroom.

The teacher plans and runs the classroom day, teaches early skills through play, and keeps children supervised and cared for from arrival to pick-up.

This role reports to the center director.

Duties

  • Plan and lead daily activities that build early skills โ€” colors, shapes, numbers, letters, personal hygiene and social skills.
  • Supervise children indoors and outdoors throughout the day.
  • Serve meals and snacks following nutritional guidelines.
  • Handle care routines for the age group: dressing, diapering and personal hygiene.
  • Keep a daily record for each child covering observations, activities, meals served and medications administered.
  • Communicate with parents about children's daily activities and behavior, and meet with them about progress.
  • Sanitize toys and keep the classroom ready for the next day.

Qualifications

[Education, credential and experience requirements.] Qualification rules for center classrooms are set by each state's child care licensing agency, so this section of a real posting is worth checking against your state's current rules before you apply.

Schedule

[Hours and days.] Childcare centers are usually open year round with long hours, and some centers cover the whole day with staggered full-time and part-time shifts โ€” so the hours in this section may be the most consequential lines in the posting.

Compensation

[Pay and benefits.] Postings list the center's own offer; the occupation-wide numbers โ€” medians by state and by setting โ€” sit on our daycare teacher salary page.

Read any posting by its duty list: it tells you the age group, how much documentation the center expects, whether families get daily reports, and how the day splits between teaching and care.

What the posting leaves out is worth asking at the interview โ€” the gaps are where offers surprise people.

Daycare teacher duties for a resume

Resume bullets earn their place when they name the task, the age group and what it produced, using the words the job actually uses.

The duty lists above are that vocabulary: care routines, skill teaching, supervision, records, family communication.

Sample bullets built from the federal task lists โ€” swap in your age group and your own details:

  • Planned and led daily activities teaching colors, shapes, numbers, letters and social skills in a [age group] classroom.
  • Kept records for each of [number] children covering daily observations, activities, meals served and medications administered.
  • Served meals and snacks following nutritional guidelines and documented what was served.
  • Communicated with parents about children's daily activities and behavior.
  • Met with parents to discuss children's progress through the year.
  • Lead each bullet with a duty verb from the job itself โ€” planned, taught, supervised, served, recorded, communicated โ€” rather than a generic 'responsible for'.
  • Name your age group in every role entry; an infant-room records bullet reads differently from a pre-K teaching bullet.
  • Put records and family communication on the page, not just teaching โ€” both are named tasks in the federal lists for this job, and both are duties you'd carry in the classroom.
  • Add a skills line in the field's own terms: monitoring, active listening, critical thinking, speaking, active learning, learning strategies, reading comprehension and writing are among O*NET's essential skills for childcare workers.
  • Quantify with your own numbers โ€” class size, how many children's records you kept, how often you sent daily reports โ€” because the numbers you can defend in an interview are the ones that belong on the page.

When the bullets are in, match them to each posting's duty list before you apply โ€” mirroring a posting's wording makes the match easy for the director to see.

When you're ready, the daycare teacher jobs board shows what centers near you are asking for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do daycare teachers change diapers?

In infant and toddler rooms, yes โ€” O*NET lists dressing children and changing diapers among the tasks for childcare workers, the occupation that includes daycare teacher titles.

The age group a posting names tells you which care routines come with the room.

Do daycare teachers actually teach, or just supervise play?

Both, and the balance depends on the classroom.

O*NET's task list for preschool teachers includes teaching colors, shapes, numbers, letters, personal hygiene and social skills, while the childcare worker list covers care routines, records and parent communication.

Job title alone doesn't decide which occupation a role falls under, so read a posting's duty list to see how a given room balances the two.

Is cleaning part of a daycare teacher's job?

Sanitizing toys is one of the tasks O*NET lists for childcare workers, so tidying and sanitizing the classroom sits inside the job rather than beside it.

How deeper cleaning divides between classroom staff and dedicated cleaners varies by center โ€” a fair question to ask in the interview.

Do daycare teachers work year round?

At the center level, BLS notes childcare centers are usually open year round with long hours, and some cover the whole day with staggered full-time and part-time shifts.

BLS also describes part-time work and irregular hours as common for childcare workers, so your own schedule depends on the center's hours and the shift you hold.

What skills does a daycare teacher need?

O*NET lists monitoring, active listening, critical thinking, speaking, active learning, learning strategies, reading comprehension and writing among the essential skills for childcare workers.

Listening and speaking carry the conversations with children and families; reading and writing carry the records.

The task lists turn those skills into named tasks โ€” teaching basic skills, serving meals, keeping records and talking with parents โ€” rather than leaving them as abstract abilities.
