A master's degree in early childhood education matters for pay mainly through the roles it can lead to: specialist teaching, schedule-paid pre-K and administration above the classroom.

Preschool special education teachers earned a median of $64,830 a year in May 2025, center directors $59,300, and Georgia's Pre-K schedule reaches $83,480 for T-7 certification at step L6 (21+ years).

Preschool teachers earned a median of $38,140 a year nationwide — and no source we verified ties a master's to a raise there.

Jobs where a master's pays

No national table we verified reports a master's premium for early childhood education.

What a master's can change is which roles you can hold: in the specialist and administrative occupations below, the published medians run above the classroom medians, and on Georgia's pre-K schedule pay rises with certification level and experience step.

The roles fall into four groups.

  • Preschool special education (ECSE) teachers. BLS tracks this as its own occupation — special education teachers, preschool (SOC 25-2051) — and its $64,830 median is the highest median on this page, in a field where BLS says public-school preschool teachers generally need a bachelor's degree and an early childhood license.
  • Public pre-K lead teachers on state salary schedules. Georgia's DECAL sets Pre-K lead pay on a state schedule that rises with certification level and experience step; DECAL credits the move to the K-12 salary scale in state fiscal year 2025 with a 16% raise for lead teachers. A schedule that pays by certification column is the most direct published mechanism we found by which education level moves salary.
  • Administration above the classroom. Education and childcare administrators, preschool and daycare (SOC 11-9031) — the series our sources treat as center directors — earned a median of $59,300 a year in May 2025, with the 90th percentile at $98,240.
  • Specialist and support roles: coaching, early intervention, college faculty. ECE coaches and early intervention specialists have no BLS occupation series of their own in the salary data our pages use, and we verified no pay figure for college-level ECE instructors — the coach salary and EI salary pages carry the neighbouring occupations' figures instead.

Which of these roles actually requires the degree depends on the employer, the state agency behind the role and the program — that is the master's in early childhood education guide's question.

This page is what the roles pay.

Typical pay for each

Here are the verified figures, each labeled with the series it comes from.

BLS rows are medians from the May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics release; the Georgia row is a salary schedule that sets pay, not a survey median — the two are different kinds of numbers.

RoleFigureSource and series
Preschool special education teachers (SOC 25-2051)$64,830/yr medianBLS OEWS, May 2025 (annual wages only)
Education and childcare administrators, preschool and daycare (SOC 11-9031)$59,300/yr medianBLS OEWS, May 2025

Preschool teachers (SOC 25-2011)$38,140/yr medianBLS OEWS, May 2025

The ECSE occupation has the widest spread on the page: the 10th percentile was $45,620 and the 90th percentile $130,040.

BLS publishes annual wages only for this occupation — no hourly figures.

Directors earned a median of $59,300 a year ($28.51 an hour), a mean of $64,800, and a 90th percentile of $98,240.

Where the employer sits matters: directors in child daycare services earned a median of $58,090 while those employed by local-government schools earned $90,950.

Georgia's FY2027 schedule (July 2026-June 2027) starts a lead teacher with an ECE bachelor's (T-1) at $41,717 and rises with experience to $56,812; the top is $83,480 for T-7 certification at step L6 (21+ years).

Grandfathered associate-degree lead teachers start at $30,949.86.

The schedule reaches private Pre-K sites too — DECAL calculates private-site lead and assistant pay from the same scale, and those teachers remain employees of the provider, not of DECAL.

Neither ECE coaches nor early intervention specialists have a BLS series of their own in the salary data our pages use, so no federal median describes either one directly.

The coach salary page and the EI salary page show the published figures for the neighbouring occupations instead — and for early intervention, state Part C provider rates were not verified in our research.

College instructors teaching early childhood courses sit outside these tables entirely; we did not verify a national pay figure for those roles.

A survey median and a salary schedule are different numbers

The BLS rows are survey medians of what workers were paid; the Georgia row is a schedule that sets pay by credential and step. Don't rank or subtract across the two systems. Amounts change by program year — confirm current figures with the administrator named (DECAL for Georgia Pre-K) and current wage data with BLS.

Where it doesn't change pay

In center classrooms, the published data describes the occupation, not your transcript.

Preschool teachers (SOC 25-2011) earned a national median of $18.34 an hour ($38,140 a year) in May 2025, and childcare workers (SOC 39-9011) earned a national median of $16.82 ($34,980 a year).

Neither table splits by degree, and none of the sources we verified quantifies a center's own master's raise.

The verified way education moves center pay is supplements.

Child Care WAGE$, run by Early Years, Inc. in North Carolina, pays education-based salary supplements to teachers, directors and family child care providers working with children birth to 5 in participating counties, and Early Years reports an average six-month supplement of $1,285.

The T.E.A.C.H.

Early Childhood National Center's programs-by-state directory lists which states run WAGE$-model programs, including Florida INCENTIVE$, Iowa WAGE$ and Tennessee WAGE$.

For Head Start classrooms, the verified facts set a degree floor, not a pay figure: BLS describes center-based Head Start preschool teachers as needing at least an associate degree, with at least 50% of Head Start preschool teachers nationwide required to hold a bachelor's in early childhood education or a related field.

A master's sits above that associate-degree floor; our research did not verify how Head Start pay treats a master's.

If you are comparing degree levels rather than jobs — associate against bachelor's against master's — the degree-by-degree figures, including DC's pay minimums by degree, are collected on our pay by degree page.

Supplements are program money, not salary scales

WAGE$ and similar programs pay supplement amounts on top of wages, only in the counties and states that fund them. Eligibility, amounts and funding tiers change by program year — confirm current details with the program administrator named (Early Years for WAGE$) before counting on one in your own budget.

Master's vs bachelor's pay gap

The clearest published master's-versus-bachelor's pair in our research comes from New York City.

A March 2024 Comptroller audit found DOE contracts funding non-union certified community-based-organization pre-K teachers at $61,070 with a bachelor's and $68,652 with a master's — the DOE entry salaries as of 2021, with no funding for experience steps or later DOE raises.

Those are 2021 figures; our research did not verify current NYC contract salaries.

Georgia's FY2027 Pre-K schedule pays by certification level and experience step, but our research did not verify which certification level a master's places a lead teacher at, so the schedule gives no master's-versus-bachelor's figure.

Its range — the $41,717 entry rate for an ECE bachelor's (T-1) up to $83,480 for T-7 certification at step L6 (21+ years) — mixes certification with more than two decades of experience steps.

The occupation medians tell a role-level story.

Preschool special education teachers (SOC 25-2051) earned a median of $64,830 against $38,140 for preschool teachers (SOC 25-2011) in the same May 2025 release — a gap between roles and the systems that pay them, not a verified master's premium.

So the honest answer to "how much more does a master's make?" is that our verified sources publish no single national percentage.

Where a master's is worth money, it is because the role pays: a schedule that rewards certification, a specialist occupation, or a seat above the classroom.

This page is career information, not licensing or legal advice. Salary schedules and pay programs change their figures; confirm current amounts with the agency that runs your program or schedule — DECAL in Georgia, for example — and current wage data with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a master's in early childhood education increase your salary?

In the specialist and administrative roles, the published medians run higher: preschool special education teachers earned a median of $64,830 and center directors $59,300 in May 2025, against $38,140 for preschool teachers nationwide.

In center classrooms, the data we verified does not split pay by degree; the education-linked money there comes from supplements such as WAGE$, which averages $1,285 per six-month period.

What is the pay gap between a bachelor's and a master's in early childhood education?

The clearest published pair in our research is from a March 2024 New York City Comptroller audit: DOE contracts funded non-union certified CBO pre-K teachers at $61,070 with a bachelor's and $68,652 with a master's — entry salaries as of 2021, with no funding for experience steps.

Georgia's Pre-K schedule pays by certification level and experience step, but our research did not verify which certification level a master's earns there.

Our research verified no broad national master's premium.

What jobs can you get with a master's degree in early childhood education?

The roles where our pay data shows the money: preschool special education teaching, public pre-K on a certification schedule, and administration above the classroom, where the director median was $59,300 in May 2025.

ECE coaching, early intervention and teaching ECE courses at a college sit alongside them; the first two have no BLS occupation series of their own in our salary data, and we verified no pay figure for college instructors.

Which programs lead there is the master's guide's topic.

How much do early intervention specialists and ECE coaches make?

Neither role has a BLS occupation series of its own in the salary data our pages use, so no federal median describes either one directly, and state Part C early intervention provider rates were not verified in our research.

The EI salary page and the coach salary page show the published figures for the neighbouring occupations BLS does track — preschool special education teaching, preschool teaching and center direction.
