The daycare director career path runs from the classroom to the office and then past a single center: aide or assistant teacher, lead teacher, assistant director, center director — and from there to multi-site management, Head Start leadership, ownership, licensing work or coaching.

Each rung trades classroom time for supervision, budgets and compliance, and on BLS OEWS May 2025 medians the teacher-to-director step is worth about $21,160 a year.

What does the leadership career ladder look like in childcare?

Childcare director careers run on a ladder with three stretches.

The first stretch is the classroom one — aide, assistant teacher, lead teacher — and it is its own progression: the classroom ladder covers those rungs in detail.

The second stretch steps into the office: assistant director, then center director.

The seat at the top of that stretch is the one the childcare director overview describes in full — this page is about the ladder it sits on.

The third stretch leaves a single building behind.

From a director's chair, the moves go up to multi-site management, sideways into ownership, regulation or coaching, and into Head Start program leadership:

  • Multi-site or district manager. Running several centers for one organization — a seat above the single director where an employer has one.
  • Owner. Owning a center instead of managing one.
  • Head Start program leadership. Director, education manager and family services manager seats inside the federal program.
  • Licensing and regulatory work. Inspecting and licensing programs from the state's side of the table — see licensing specialist.
  • Coaching and consulting. Improving classrooms and programs instead of running them — see early childhood coach.

The destination is big enough to have its own BLS profile: preschool and childcare center directors held about 91,900 jobs in 2025 — 72% in child daycare services, 10% in religious, grantmaking and civic organizations, 6% self-employed, 3% in private schools and 3% in local public schools.

The profile does not break Head Start roles out separately.

Who a director answers to also shapes the path.

At independently owned centers, directors follow the owner's guidelines — and sometimes the director is the owner.

At chains and franchises, the director must meet the parent organization's standards.

Head Start directors follow U.S. Department of Health and Human Services requirements.

How do teachers move into the office?

The first office rung is assistant director.

BLS's description of the job gives one concrete picture of how a building splits the two roles: in large centers, directors and assistant directors may stagger their schedules so someone is always on site.

The commitment changes shape with the move: BLS says most preschool and childcare center directors work full time, some more than 40 hours a week, and they are on site while the center is open.

Build the office record while you are still in the classroom

Teachers who want the move can ask for the office-adjacent work first: covering the director's day, owning a schedule, leading a family tour, sitting in on enrollment conversations. That record reads well when a director post opens.

What comes after center director?

A director title is not the ceiling of the childcare leadership ladder.

Five directions open up, and each is its own job market:

  • Multi-site management. One organization, several centers: a district, regional or area manager seat over several directors. The research behind this page did not confirm how chains structure these roles — how many centers one manager oversees, or whether director-in-training programs feed them — so ask the employer how its own ladder works.
  • Ownership. Directors who want the upside as well as the workload move to the owner's side of the desk — the paths in are the territory of owning a center.
  • Head Start program leadership. The federal program runs its own ladder — director, education manager and family services manager among the seats — across programs that employed and contracted with 251,000 staff in 2023-24. Under the current Head Start Program Performance Standards (45 CFR 1302.91(b), the Office of Head Start's rules), a Head Start director hired after November 7, 2016 must hold at least a baccalaureate degree plus experience in supervising staff, in fiscal management and in administration. An August 2026 proposed rule would rescind and replace those standards and remove that director qualification — it was a proposal, not a final rule, as of October 5, 2026.
  • Licensing and regulatory work. State agencies staff the other side of the inspection table. California's class, the Licensing Program Analyst, licenses and evaluates community care facilities, responds to complaints, appeals and inquiries, and conducts investigations — regulator work rather than running a program. See licensing specialist.
  • Coaching and consulting. Head Start programs must currently run a coordinated, research-based coaching strategy (45 CFR 1302.92(c)), and coaches under those rules must hold at least a baccalaureate degree in early childhood education or a related field (45 CFR 1302.91(f)) — requirements the same August 2026 proposal would remove. Practice-Based Coaching is one research-based coaching strategy HeadStart.gov describes a program could choose to meet the requirement — not the only allowed model. The early childhood coach page covers the role and the model.

Which moves pay the most?

On BLS OEWS May 2025 national medians, preschool and childcare center directors (SOC 11-9031) earned $59,300 against $38,140 for preschool teachers, except special education (SOC 25-2011) — about $21,160 a year more.

Inside child care services (NAICS 6244) — where 60,540 of the 73,660 wage-and-salary director jobs BLS counts nationally sit — the gap is about $21,240 ($58,090 vs $36,850).

Median pay for the rungs and the exits around the director's chair — all one series, BLS OEWS May 2025, national medians unless the row says otherwise:

MoveBLS series (SOC)Median pay
Preschool teacher, except special education25-2011, national$38,140
Same occupation, in child care services25-2011, industry$36,850
Assistant director — proxy occupation (BLS has no assistant-director code)39-1022, national$48,590
Same proxy, in child care services39-1022, industry$44,490
Preschool and childcare center director11-9031, national$59,300
Directors in child care services11-9031, industry$58,090
Directors employed by elementary and secondary schools11-9031, industry$76,220
Directors in religious organizations11-9031, industry$63,590
Instructional coordinator25-9031, child care services$53,980
Education administrators, kindergarten through secondary — a different occupation family11-9032, national$105,870

Read the table three ways.

The classroom-to-office step is the big one: about $21,160 a year at the national median.

Setting matters as much as title — the same director code pays $76,220 where the employer is elementary and secondary schools and $63,590 in religious organizations, against $58,090 in child care services.

And national numbers can mislead for jobs that sit largely outside childcare: instructional coordinators show $77,440 nationally against $53,980 in child care services — a national figure dominated by K-12, counting 227,760 jobs to child care services' 6,700.

The assistant director step is the hardest to price.

BLS publishes no assistant-director code; one proxy is first-line supervisors of personal service workers (SOC 39-1022) — $48,590 nationally, $44,490 in child care services (10,150 jobs) — and some assistant directors are counted under the director code instead.

Treat it as a proxy, not a quote for any single center.

Two cautions round out the picture.

The director code's spread is wide: the 10th percentile paid $38,580 and the 90th $98,240 — percentiles describing the distribution, not any one center's pay.

And ownership breaks the table entirely: OEWS counts wage-and-salary jobs — 73,660 of them for directors nationally — so what an owner draws out of the business is outside these medians; the 6% self-employed share comes from BLS's separate director profile, which does count them.

How long does each step take?

The research behind this page did not turn up a national timetable for promotions — the moves are hiring decisions, and a center acts when a director post opens.

What the sources do put clocks on are the qualification gates.

Texas shows how concrete the gate gets.

A center licensed for 13 or more children must have a director who is at least 21, holds a high school diploma or equivalent, and meets one of seven education-and-experience combinations under 26 TAC §746.1015, the Texas rule chapter.

One of those routes takes a CDA or Certified Child-Care Professional credential plus 6 college credit hours in management and at least two years of licensed-center experience — a route that runs through credentials a lead teacher may already hold or be working toward.

Other states write their own routes; the state's child care licensing agency is the authority on the current list.

The credential courses that can sit on top of a state route are short.

The National Administrator Credential (NAC), offered by NECPA, is a 45-hour course organized into 10 competency sections, delivered on-site in 4-5 days or online.

Aim4Excellence, the McCormick Institute's online National Director Credential, is nine self-paced modules, accepted by 28 state professional development systems.

Neither is a degree.

Head Start's federal rules put clocks on its own rungs too: a preschool assistant teacher without a CDA may start while enrolled in an associate or bachelor's program, or in a CDA program that must be finished within two years of hire (45 CFR 1302.91(e)(3)).

Director qualifications are licensing rules — confirm them where you work

Who may direct a center is set by the state child care licensing agency, and rulebooks change. The Texas routes above are one state's example, scoped to centers licensed for 13 or more children. Confirm the current director requirements with your own state's licensing agency before you plan a move around any route described here.

What if you want to leave childcare?

Center leadership is portable, and the clearest exits are to the education and human-services work next door:

  • School administration. Education administrators, kindergarten through secondary (SOC 11-9032) — the occupational family that includes principals — had a national median of $105,870 (OEWS May 2025). It is a different system from center licensing: confirm certification and hiring requirements with the state education agency rather than assuming a center résumé carries over.
  • Social and human services. Child, family, and school social workers (SOC 21-1021) had a national median of $59,550; social and human service assistants (SOC 21-1093) $45,930 nationally and $44,200 in child care services. Directors drawn to the family-facing side of the job have Head Start family service staff roles as one bridge.
  • Curriculum and instruction. Instructional coordinators (SOC 25-9031) earned $53,980 in child care services on OEWS May 2025 — the same industry row discussed above, against a $77,440 national median.
  • Regulation. The licensing specialist path puts you on the state agency's side of the desk — the seat described in the section above.

One caution travels with every exit: a center credential is not, by itself, the credential another system asks for.

Each certifying body sets its own entry rules — check with the agency or board behind the job you want before you plan around a carry-over.

This page is career information, not licensing or legal advice. Qualification rules, Head Start standards and pay data all change — confirm what applies to your next move with the state child care licensing agency or the federal office named above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a daycare teacher become a director without a degree?

It depends on the state, because each state's child care licensing agency writes the director qualifications.

Texas gives a worked example: one route for centers licensed for 13 or more children takes a CDA or Certified Child-Care Professional credential, 6 college credit hours in management, and at least two years of licensed-center experience (26 TAC §746.1015).

Confirm the current routes with your own state's licensing agency before planning around one.

How much do assistant daycare directors make?

BLS has no assistant-director code, so there is no direct figure.

One proxy, first-line supervisors of personal service workers (SOC 39-1022), paid a median of $48,590 nationally and $44,490 in child care services on OEWS May 2025 — and some assistant directors are counted under the director code (SOC 11-9031, $59,300 national median) instead.

Treat both as proxies, not quotes.

What position is above a daycare director?

Above a single center can sit a district or regional manager over several sites, where an organization runs more than one center (our research did not confirm how chains structure those roles).

Other next steps are center ownership and Head Start program leadership — director, education manager, family services manager.

Outside providers altogether, the field offers state licensing and regulatory seats plus coaching and consulting work.

Which fits depends on whether you want more buildings, your own center, or a different seat in the same field.

How many childcare directors are there in the US?

BLS's Occupational Outlook Handbook counted about 91,900 preschool and childcare center director jobs in 2025: 72% in child daycare services, 10% in religious, grantmaking and civic organizations, 6% self-employed, 3% in private schools and 3% in local public schools.

Head Start roles are not broken out separately in that profile.
